One of the best parts about Savannah is its close proximity to other incredible southern cities. In a little less than 5 hours, you can drive to Asheville, NC and spend the weekend enjoying mountain air, breathtaking scenery, and plenty of unique local flare.
Where to Stay
Biltmore Village is located at the foot of the estate and features old world architecture that’s reminiscent of a european village from another time. Situated in the Biltmore Village is the Grand Bohemian. Part of Richard Kessler’s Autograph Collection, this gorgeous space looks like a mountain lodge, but it’s meticulously appointed with luxe details throughout. The massive brick fireplace in the middle of the lobby is our favorite touch. When guests walk out of the hotel’s doors, they’re greeted with plenty of shopping and dining options.
Where to Eat
Asheville is full of locally owned spots to eat. From coffee shops serving up local brew and pastries, to interesting taquerias, to fine dining, there’s always something new to try.
The Red Stag Grill is located in the Grand Bohemian. Keeping with the hotel’s rustic luxury theme, it offers diners a beautiful space to enjoy remarkable food. Their menu rotates through seasonal offerings and always impresses. We recommend starting with the Lobster Dumas, moving on to the Sunburst Mountain Trout, and finishing your meal with the Pecan Carrot Cake. The Red Stag also offers an impressive bar with plenty of handcrafted cocktails, a lovely wine list, and a wonderful selection of local draft beers.
The Cantina at Biltmore Village is a fun, quirky fresh-mex restaurant and bar that offers a menu far beyond what one would expect from a typical Mexican restaurant. The Cantina offers plenty of traditional mexican favorites, with the addition of many vegan and gluten free options to delight diners with varying tastes. We recommend the AshVeggie quesadilla, which is stuffed with spinach, goat and jack, pico and beans.
The Corner Kitchen is one of our favorite spots in the Biltmore Village. This farm to table restaurant believes in eating locally sourced, healthy, and incredibly delicious food. Because they serve seasonal, local food, the menu rotates monthly. Coco Mole Braised Pork Shank is typically on the menu throughout the year, and is absolutely incredible.
Where to Shop
Margaret and Maxwell Wine Salon welcomes every visitor like they’re a longtime friend. Part tasting bar, and part wine parlor, this unique wine salon invites visitors to recline on an antique sofa while sipping a wine from their curated collection.
Porter and Prince Luxuries and Linens lives up to its name. Their thoughtful collection of luxurious linens, sleepwear, and beautiful gifts is an absolute delight to take in. We’re particularly fond of their fine soaps, cashmere wrap, and their collection of some of the softest sheets we’ve felt.
What to Do
A trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway is an absolute must when visiting Asheville. There are several places to get on and off the parkway in the Asheville area, including one within two miles of the Grand Bohemian. The Parkway’s twists and turns and sweeping mountain views make for a breathtaking experience. There are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view, and many hiking trails where visitors can stretch their legs and immerse themselves in the mountains.
The Biltmore is one of the crown jewels of the south. The massive home is open daily for tours and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the Vanderbilt family. With original furnishings and accents, the decor is almost as incredible as the architecture. Set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the property is offers surprises and delights at every turn. The greenhouse, full of unique and beautifully manicured plants, is a crowd favorite. A short drive from the main house is the barn, the winery, and a variety of shops and restaurants. The winery tour and tasting is a sumptuous experience for those over 21.
Asheville is an wonderful trip any time of year. The city is vibrant, and the mountains are breathtaking. It’s truly a southern luxury destination.
